Domaine Lafage – Perpignan, France

Domaine Lafage is a family-run winery in Roussillon, southern France, farming around 138 hectares across the Agly Valley, the Aspres and the outskirts of Perpignan. Founded in 1996 by Jean-Marc and Éliane Lafage, seventh-generation winegrowers, the estate stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the foothills of the Pyrenees and produces wines from Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Marsanne and Roussanne. In recent years, severe and prolonged drought has reshaped viticulture across Roussillon, and building resilience and adaptation into every part of the estate has become central to how Domaine Lafage farms.

Since early 2026, the entire vineyard has been Certified Regenerative by A Greener World (AGW), verifying the careful, long-term management practices that Domaine Lafage uses to build soil health, restore biodiversity, and produce distinctive wines. The estate is also certified by the Regenerative Viticulture Alliance.

Regenerative practice at Domaine Lafage begins with the soil and its ability to hold water. Biochar applications lift water availability to the vines by up to a quarter. Concrete culverts that once sped rainfall off the land have been replaced by edge-of-vineyard ditches, and new keyline plantings follow the contours to slow runoff and let more water soak in. Sheep graze 35 hectares through the winter months, depositing manure and managing inter-row growth, and a new vermicomposting facility turns winery wastewater into compost for the vines. Under matched drought conditions, the estate estimates that its regenerative plots last a full month longer than conventionally farmed plots before vines start to show water stress. That extra month proved its worth in 2025, when Roussillon went from June to October without meaningful rain.

“We can’t be organic everywhere,” says Jean-Marc Lafage, “but we feel comfortable working in regenerative.”
