Unthank Hall Traditional Meats – Holmsfield, Derbyshire

Charlotte and Dan Lowe own and manage Unthank Hall Farm, a family run livestock farm near Holmsfield in Derbyshire on the edge of the dramatic Peak District National Park. Remarkably, the farm has been in the family for over 500 years.

Charlotte and Dan raise Certified Animal Weflare Approved by AGW Dexter beef cattle, the smallest breed of cattle. The traditional Dexter is very hardy and ideally suited to farm’s environment, where the winters can be harsh and the grazing is largely unimproved pasture. The Dexter produces excellent, tender and nutritious beef, which is dry-aged for at least 28 days and prepared using the finest traditions of British craft butchery. Beef is sold directly to the public under the Unthank Hall Traditional Meats brand.

The cattle at Unthank Hall Farm are also Certified Grassfed by AGW and are fed a 100 precent grassfed diet with no other grain or supplements. They are raised outdoors on pasture using rotational management, grazing one section of pasture before being moved to fresh fields. This type of management allows grass to recover before the animals return to graze again; it also keeps the soil properly fertilised and minimises the build-up of internal parasites, thereby avoiding reliance on chemical treatments. The cattle are allowed to reach maturity at 30 to 36 months before slaughter.

Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW, Certified Grassfed by AGW beef is available to purchase directly from the farm via their online shop. Check the AGW directory for details or visit www.unthank-meat.co.uk.
