Pluma SA, Manjakandriana, Madagascar
Pluma SA raises Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) chickens on a small farm in Ampasimpotsy, in the Manjakandriana district of Madagascar’s Analamanga region.
The farm runs a flock of 800 birds on around 1 hectare and employs a local team of around 10 people, enabling daily attention to the health and well-being of the birds while contributing to employment opportunities in the community.
The birds have continuous outdoor access to natural vegetation and shade where they can enjoy fresh air, sunlight, and the space to peck, scratch and forage. Their diet is based on locally sourced, non-GMO feed, supplemented by natural plants and insects on the range. Freshly cut tender grass and legumes are occasionally brought in from outside the rotation so the birds can continue to peck and feed on green fibre. The outdoor range is managed on a simple rotation. It is divided into sections of 24 square metres, separated by netting, with each section grazed for a week and then rested for two. This three-week cycle gives soils and vegetation time to recover before the birds return. A vet visits the flock regularly for routine health monitoring and preventive care.
Vegetation around the farm is carefully managed to provide appropriate shade for the birds, while local flora and fauna are respected by keeping disturbance to a minimum, avoiding practices that could negatively impact the surrounding ecosystem. Manure is gathered and stored carefully to protect soil quality and avoid a build-up of nutrients.
The farm produces chicken meat and feathers. The meat is eaten on site in the staff canteen and donated to associations supporting vulnerable groups in the region, while the feathers are sold to specialist markets as a natural by-product.
For Pluma SA, AGW certification offers independent recognition of the way the farm already works, particularly around animal welfare and responsible farming. The team applied because they wanted their approach checked and verified by a trusted, globally recognised body, and AGW’s practical focus on welfare, transparency and credible standards reflects the way they already farm. The Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW logo gives customers and partners the confidence that birds at Pluma SA are raised outdoors with continuous access to range, on a farm where bird welfare comes first.
