Stephen Keighley and Rose Garcia raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW)…
Amelia Millman and Jason Greenway raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW), Certified Grassfed by AGW beef cattle and Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pigs at Springwater Farm, near Clyst St. Lawrence in Devon. The couple started their own farming business in 2018 when they were offered a farm tenancy by the National Trust on 86 acres of species-rich pasture and ancient woodland, nestled between steep Devonshire valleys.
The herd of cattle at Spingwater Farm comprise of Devon Red Ruby and Highland breeds. Docile by nature and compact in size, the Red Ruby is a traditional local breed, highly prized for its spectacular marbled beef. It is an efficient grazer and causes minimum damage to the land, making it ideally suited to grazing land that has high conservation value. While not native to Devon, the Highland cattle are a hardy breed able to withstand extreme weather conditions of Scotland, and are thus more than happy out on windy Devonshire valleys at Springwater Farm instead! In addition to being Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW, the cattle at Springwater Farm are also Certified Grassfed by AGW, guaranteeing the cattle are raised and finished on a 100% grass and forage diet without any supplementary soya or grain feed, for example.
Amelia and Jason also manage pasture-raised pigs on the farm. The Oxford Sandy and Black pigs are a rare traditional breed known for their gentle nature and minimal husbandry requirements—as well as delicious pork! They also raise Mangalitsa pigs, well known for its thick, curly coat of hair and excellent, fatty meat, which is perfect for charcuterie. Both pig breeds are well adapted to life outdoors and spend a great deal of time forage and rooting for food, resulting in a rich and complex flavoured meat. They lend themselves well to being slow grown and that extra time means they have the time to lay down intermuscular fat, known as ‘marbling’, something that is rarely seen in pork.
“We believe it is our duty as caretakers over our acreage to ensure we are farming in such a way that not only preserves but improves the quality and quantity of fertile arable topsoil of our farm,” says Amelia. “Quality and traceability are two aspects of what we do that are of the utmost importance to us. We want to produce quality livestock and can promise complete traceability from birth to plate.”
“We believe farm certification like A Greener World is important for both the producer and the consumer, as it helps both parties to understand exactly what they are buying or selling,” says Amelia. “We choose to be certified to assure our customers of our farming standards.”
Springwater Farm’s Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW, Certified Grassfed by AGW beef and Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pork are sold direct from the farm, with a variety of meat boxes available for local and national delivery.
