UK farmers will have woken up this morning to the news that measures in the…
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and only three miles from the town of Bishop’s Castle in Shropshire, Partridge Farm is part of the prestigious Linley Hall Estate. Farmer James Evans manages a Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW), Certified Grassfed by AGW and Certified Non-GMO by AGW beef cattle and sheep on the 750-acre arable and livestock farm.
After a new owner took over the Linley Hall Estate a few years ago, James used the opportunity to transform the farm to a more sustainable model. Along the way, he embraced the challenges of the transition and he is now a passionate advocate for the sustainable practices used to raise his animals. James manages 500 pure-bred Lleyn ewes, as well as 180 spring-calving pure Stabiliser cows for sale as breeding stock and for their high-quality beef.
The farming practices at Partridge Farm are not only better for the animals but also for the wider environment. The cows are rotationally managed, grazing one area of pasture before being moved to fresh fields. This allows grass to recover before cows return to graze again; it also minimises the build-up of internal parasites, thereby avoiding reliance on chemical treatments.
“Our cows and sheep are moved daily to replicate what nature intended,” says James. “This type of sustainable farming has brought more insects to the farm. We’ve also improved the soil quality and see a lot more wildlife in the area, too. We don’t buy any artificial fertiliser, chemicals or feed anymore. Now that I’ve gone down this route, I’m so thrilled to be farming this way. My goal is to run a highly profitable farming model, while farming organically and sustainably.”
The beef cattle and sheep at Partridge Farm are also Certified Grassfed by AGW and Certified Non-GMO by AGW. These certifications are optional, additional accreditations for farmers meeting Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW standards of production and offer ISO-accredited assurance of high-welfare, 100 percent grassfed feeding protocol and non-GMO farming practices, respectively. With the growing disconnect of consumers from the source of their food—and growing demand for meaningful welfare standards—Partridge Farm found it essential to have third-party validation demonstrating their exceptional practices to a market hungry for truthful information about their food.
Partridge Farm’s Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW, Certified Grassfed by AGW and Certified Non-GMO by AGW beef and sheep products are sold direct from the farm, as well as select shops.
