Ivy House Farm farm profile

Ivy House Farm – Somerset, UK

Geoff and Kim Bowles raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) and Certified Non-GMO by AGW dairy cattle on pasture at Ivy House Farm in north-east Somerset.

Geoff and Kim Bowles moved to the picturesque village of Beckington in 1982 and began farming a small herd of Friesian cows. As the price of milk continued to drop, they realised something had to make drastic changes in order to sustain the farm busines, so they decided to diversify. Geoff’s uncle, John, gave them 20 Jersey cows and a cream separator. Thirty years later, Ivy House Farm is home to over 120 cows and supplies delicious, high-quality dairy products to customers across the south of England.

The farming practices at Ivy House Farm are not only better for the animals, but also for the wider environment. The cows are rotationally managed, grazing one section of pasture before being moved to fresh fields. This allows grass to recover before cows return to graze again; it also minimises the build-up of internal parasites, thereby avoiding reliance on chemical treatments.

Geoff and Kim are passionate about how they raise their animals. The AGW-certified dairy cows are raised outdoors on pasture, not treated with routine antibiotics or other chemical inputs, and are fed a non-GMO, organic diet. “We milk our herd of Jersey cows throughout the year,” says Geoff. “During the warmer months the cows are free to graze our lush green pastures. During winter they are fed our home-grown organic silage. We have been a fully certified organic farm for over 20 years and we couldn’t be happier.”

Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW, Certified Non-GMO by AGW milk and other dairy products (including butter, whipping cream, clotted cream and buttermilk) from Ivy House Farm are sold at stockists throughout the south of England, including London, Bath and Bristol. Ivy House Farm’s products are also available from select online retailers who deliver direct to customers. Visit ivyhousefarm.co.uk for more information.
