Stephen Keighley and Rose Garcia raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) sheep and ducks at Ena Gwel Farm in Launceston, Cornwall. The 8-acre small holding is situated in rural Cornwall underneath Kit Hill near Callington, and features a mix of woodland and two pasture fields that gently slopes into the valley below.
The flock of 30 sheep at Ena Gwel Farm are native rare breeds including Hebrideans, North Ronaldsays, Shetlands and Soays. “Our small holding is centered around conservation and our sheep breeds are not only perfect for our conservation objectives but their quality wool is a valuable asset to the craft side of our project,” says Stephen. “We pride ourselves on giving our animals the opportunity to have access to the best possible forage to help manage their own dietary and health needs. Our sheep can roam between woodland areas for shade, shelter and food.”
The sheep at Ena Gwel Farm are also Certified Grassfed by AGW, an optional, additional accreditation for farmers meeting Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW standards of production which offer ISO-accredited assurance of high-welfare and a 100 percent grassfed feeding protocol. With the growing disconnect of consumers from the source of their food and increasing demand for meaningful welfare standards, Ena Gwel Farm found it essential to have third-party validation demonstrating their exceptional practices to a market hungry for truthful information about their food.
Ena Gwel Farm is also home to a small flock of Indian Runner ducks: “Our ducks provide us with pasture-raised, free-range eggs but also follow our sheep in a rotation system to gobble up parasites and fertilise the soil as part of our pasture management plan,” Stephen explains.
“We strongly believe in the certifications of A Greener World and very much wanted to be part of the programme,” Stephen adds. “To us, gaining certification was an indication of how we were doing but also gave us ideas of how to get even better at what we do.”
